The clutch pedal on my `Traveller` rocks a little from side to side, and the brake pedal more so. I imagine a bearing or bush is worn, but please,....where do I start ?

Yes - there's a shaft down there - and oilite type bearing. It's quite a job - live with it if you can ! Page FF6 of the Manual shows the clutch and brake pedal linkages - and the shaft/bearings etc

The clutch shaft runs in 2 plain bushes in the chassis leg. The brake pedal sits on the clutch shaft also using plain bushes.
The shaft can be hard to remove if the spacer is rusted solid to the shaft, but if you can free the spacer off, the rest of the job is ok.

The bushes can be drifted out of the chassis leg using the right size implement (I used a socket).
If the shaft is badly worn it can be welded up and re-dressed to size or just replaced with a new one.
On the last one I did, the bushes in the brake pedal were fine but the shaft was worn! I'm sure there was an explanation but it was a bit confusing to see the wear on the harder metal, not the soft bush!

Once the pedal shaft is refurbished, the car is much more pleasant to drive - but make sure it is covered in grease to avoid having to do it again a few years later.

Sorry for bringing this thread up again but I found it by doing a search.

I think I will need to do mine as my clutch is slipping (adjustment I hope) and whilst fixing it I thought I'd better change these bearings. My pedals move far too much for my liking.

Does anyone have any pictures so I can assess how hard this job is. I don't mind hard jobs, but with 4 cars and 4 motorbike, I don't want to have one sitting in the garage too long whilst waiting for a part. I like to plan jobs, and then get them in and out keeping the garage space clear for the emergency breakdowns.

All well shown in the Workshop Manual - Page E2 for clutch and M2 for brake !

Its a fairly fiddly job as you have quite a bit of stripping out to get at the pedals. The gearbox cover has to come off, sometimes a nightmare due to the wee brass screws. Before you go that far though soak the threaded end at the torsion bar with wd 40, this has a castle nut on the end and usually a split pin. Also soak the spacer between the brake pedal and chasis leg. This spacer should be able to turn round with your fingers, if your very unlucky it could be seized solid and may need heated to free it. In my blue minor the pedal shaft was so worn it looked like a crank shaft! It made a huge difference when the bushes and shaft were replaced. The bushes are oilite and should be steeped in engine oil for a few days before fitting.

I'll have a go at adjusting the clutch so it doesn't slip anymore and check the spacer while I'm there. My under side of the car is covered in waxoil with a layer of dirt on top. Not looking forward to this one.

I had a look under the car today so I could judge what needs doing.

First I adjusted the free play in the clutch and went for a test drive. After manny steep hills I'm please to report my clutch is no longer slipping.

So now just the rocking pedals to fix. I couldn't see the space you mentioned, is it only visible from above with the transmition cover removed?
How much needs stripping out? Does the torsion bar stay in or does it need to be removed?

Also, The clutch pedal drives a second shaft which then moves the clutch. I have play in the linkage to the second shaft which gives about 1/2" play onthe pedal. So I'm no thinking of replacing the whole linkage. The cost for the parts will be covered with what I would save doing it myself rather than a garage. Plus if I change the bronze bushes and still have play because the shaft is worn I'll be anoyed. I'm only planning to do this once.

Final question, Does the seats need to be removed to get the tramsmission cover off?

If it's just the clutch relay shaft and bushes, I replaced them on mine last year and I'm pretty sure I didn't have to remove the gearbox cover. I drove the car up on ramps and did it from below.

It shouldn't take more than about an hour if the old bolts are not seized up.

But - they WILL be!

to answer a previous question - to remove the cluch pedal on a Minor 1000, you do need to remove the transmission tunnel cover.
