inlet/exhaust valves

Can anyone tell me how I can identify which valve in each pair is the inlet and which is the exhaust?
I'm adjusting the gaps to 12/15 respectively but I'm not sure which is which!

What a fool I am - I could have looked at where the manifolds were connected.

You can set either hot or cold. Morris recommends .012" for both cold and add .001" if doing them hot. General concensus now for running on unleaded fuel is to set inlets to .012" and exhaust to .015" cold - still add the .001" if doing them hot.

Doesn't make any odds - when hot - both head and valve stem (and push rod etc) will have expanded slightly - so within the limits the same gaps apply! In this weather - HOT will keep your fingers from freezing together - maybe.

There is a plate on the side valve engine which says Set Tappets to .018 Hot.
To set the tappets you have to remove the air filter, undo the carb cables, undo the exhaust bolts and drop the front pipe, undo the manifold bolts and remove the manifold and carb, remove the breather pipe and oil pressure pipe and then remove the tappet chest cover, by which time the engine is cold!!!!
You then have the job of hanging upside down with three spanners and a feeler gauge trying to set the tappets :(

Ahh - that's progress for you - my Morris 8E (same engine) had a handy plate in the inner wing which could be removed to give access! Still a hellish job though! Don't see why you could make a similar opening in the inner wing of a Minor - but wouldn't be 'original' I suppose!

The top suspension arm would get in the way. Anyway, if the tappets are tightened up properly before the engine is fitted the should very rarely need adjusting.

Hi Mike
I am in the process of deciding whether to fix a harness from the garage rafters to suspend either myself or the MM to make the job a little easier :D :D

You could remove the damper -to make the adjustments!
