gearbox clatter

i get a slight clatter sound when i go into 3rd all other gears are fine

any one what might be causing it

Crunch would be poor syncro - clatter - dunno!

go into 3rd ok, just makes a clatter like sound when driving i 3rd
got me stumped

Oohhhhhhh! Clattering sound while driving! Hmm - assuming oil is ok - it may be first signs of laygear/layshaft wear problems. May also be there in 1st and 2nd - but other noises mask it out. Look out your spare boxes Dennis! Take the side cover off - and inspect the little dog-teeth on 2nd gear (left of centre here) and 3rd gear (right of centre) - compare with 4th gear (extreme right) - they 'never' wear! [frame]Image[/frame] You want to use the one with the best/sharpest teeth!

Check the brass washer is sound, inbetween 2nd and 3rd gear (as shown in Roy's photo) and why is there a load of italics at the bottom of my posts instead of a picture?

Good point les - although I wasn't at this stage suggesting inspecting the 'running' gearbox -it's not easy to get at it!
I don't think the 'italics' will make it clatter ?

Just kidding! The new 'signature' thing is very temperamental - it took me ages to get mine working - and in the end - I don't really know what happened! :oops:
