I have a 69 Traveller and the engine runs fine at start up and for about 10 mins. However, after the engine heats up it starts to run rough (especially at full throttle when its very down on power) but eventually dies even at idle.
There is fuel in the tank, and I also checked the fuel pump and it seems strong. Also fuel filter is fine without any contamination.
However whilst poking about under the bonnet I noticed a metal pipe waving about near the float chamber and a hissing noise. I pushed this pipe back into where it seemed to have come from - a rubber nipple thingy attached to the side of the float chamber. This did seem to help, although the rubber seems split and I was still getting some juddering / cut outs today on a test drive (a bit scary at one point when it cut out while turning right off an A-road !).
I have ordered a new rubber thingy to attach the pipe securely. However, my question is if this pipe could be cause of my trouble ?
Reading posts here seems to suggest that this might be the vacuum advance pipe - but ALSO seems to suggest that this is only doing something only at partial throttle. Indeed - should it have been hissing ?
Any insights from those that know these things would be much appreciated.
many thanks,
FG

It IS the vacuum pipe - and being off like that affects the engine in two ways - by allowing excess air into the manifold - and by NOT advancing the ignition as it should. So - a new rubber connector may just solve your problem!

Re: Runs Rough then dies after 10 min
Seems strange that it would only effect running after 10 mins though. Check and make sure you have not got a vacuum in the fuel tank. If it runs rough again after changing your rubber thingy (
) remove the fuel cap and see if it cures the problem....

Also, how's the water in the radiator. Strangely enough I've been looking at a similar problem today that turned out to be a hairline crack in the head - fine when it was cold, but as it got hot, opened up enough to lose compression and let water in

Thanks for the feedback so far.
Regarding water: Just been out to check the water in the radiator - looks fine and uncontaminated, about an inch below the lip within the radiator lid (its cold). Also heating was working fine today (!)
