I have 3 options for powering my Traveller and I can't decide which way to go so I thought I'd throw it open to you guys for opinion....

1 - Keep everything standard ie 948 engine / box and 4.55 back axle.
2 - Fit 1275 engine, 1098 box and 4.22 back axle (I have all these parts available)
3- Build a 998 inline engine from a 1098 block and mini pistons with a 1098 box and 4.22 back axle

Also I have a big valve 940 head and I am about to purchase an LCB and big bore system, so combinations on the above are possible.

The only bit I don't have at the moment is a 1098 block and I am also thinking about supercharging as an option (but maybe not for this car)

I want to be able to use the car regularly and it will be doing some long runs to events this year...... So which way is the way forward......???

i think number 2 - Fit 1275 engine, 1098 box and 4.22 back axle

If the engine is out already go for option 2. If the engine is still in leave it till it breaks and then worry about changing it although putting the 4.22 diff in might make it slightly quieter on the long runs.

Work on the 1275cc motor ie take out to 1360cc, loads or torque and about 105-120bhp with some headwork on a MG metro head.
This would then be suitable for a Type 9 5 spd conversion and a 3.9 diff.
Sort the braking and suspension and you will have a car for all seasons

I'm not sure how much power a 1098 box will handle, so option two but with a 1275 Midget box might be better (But Midget boxes are not that plentiful). Fitting 155 or 165 tyres could up the gearing a tad for your longer trips. I think a 3.77 is too high, though a 3.9 might work.

All good stuff posted so far and is pretty much in line with my thoughts (thankfully). I should just point out though, to Jono, that the money pit is empty and the options are based around parts that I already have to hand

948 engine - with the 4.22 diff - and the 940 head ! But a 1098 cam in the 948 engine will help a LOT! Cheap and cheerful. Should give good economy and keep up with traffic ok!

I knew Roy would come up with the cheapest option - Might actually be my first tuning loop as it is the easiest and I'll be interested to see how it goes too

These days - lucky to get above 60 mph anywhere!

Not sure whether to be 'pleased' or 'offended' at comment about knowing I would come up with the cheapest!! It's the one that makes the most sense -given the parts that are 'in stock'!
