Official specifications for LP917 van wheels

Post by don58van »

All

Does anyone out there know of any official documentation of the specifications for the LP917 (4 1/2 inch) van wheels?

I have a set so I can take my own measurements--it is the official documentation I am after.

Why does this matter? Here in Oz, modifications to vehicles is tightly controlled by the registration authorities. There are national rules that the States abide by. This is done in the interests of safety--the rules are based on sound engineering principles.

One of the myriad of modifications that is controlled is the track of the vehicle. Only a certain increase in track over standard is permitted.

So, when a Minor owner wants to fit non-standard wheels (and/or the brakes/suspension is being modified), the wheel width and offset specifications are critical for compliance with the rules.

The kingpin on the front suspension limits how much extra wheel/tyre width can be accommodated toward the centre of the vehicle, so most increase has to be toward the outside where it increases the track.

As the LP917 wheels were a factory fitted item, it qualifies under our rules as a starting point for measuring the permitted increase in track. As you know, these wheels are both wider and have a bigger offset than the standard (3 inch) wheels. This increases the track, so it would help us considerably to have an official document stating their specifications.

I have the BLMC workshop manual for the late models vans and pickups (dated 1970) and it mentions the larger tyre size for the 8cwt (LP917) wheels but does not give wheel specifications. Nor is there a separate track specification for models fitted with the 8cwt wheels. I also have the service parts book covering these models--it mentions the different wheel for the 8cwt models, but does not give specifications (incidentally, it doesn't refer to them as 'LP917s'--they are given a completely different part number).

Of course, if anyone has any official documentation for the LP936s, that would be great too!

Cheers
Don
