Looking to put the largest wheels and tyres on the rear of my 1954 splitscreen 4 door saloon. The rear axle is an Escort MK2. I will be jacking up the back end to accomodate these. Want it to look like a 1970s custom car. Any ideas

Depends on offset of the wheels, but an 8" will fit on which you can go 225 section.Depends on how you approach the 70's look which is normally small 13-14" wheels and very high profile tyres, or you could go 17"'s and low profile

If you are going 70's custom then it has to be Slotmags, the ultimate wheels. I would go, as Jonathon says, 13 or 14" and maybe 8 or 10" wide. I have 14x8" on the back of mine, can't remember what tyre size it is but they are ballons

I've been toying with the idea of whacking big tyres on my rear wheels also. I'm lowering the suspension by 1.5" (with the block kit), any thoughts as to the maximum profile that could be fitted? (Wheels are 14" x 5.5J minilights)

I really want to get some centrelines or smoothies, about 8-10" wide for the rear with the JLH 2" oversize wings, but that is well out of budget atm!

Also, would fitting larger tyres (and consequently increasing the circumference of the wheel) have a similar effect, albeit small, to fitting a lower ratio diff?

The widest I'd go would be 195's on a 5.5" rim. You may struggle to get high profiles at reasonable costs as 195's tend to be very popular with 50 or 55 section. 2" oversized wings, 'what a grear idea' :D . We have also unfortunately stopped selling the Centrelines. Fitting a larger rolling radius will dull acceleration, but increase top end , assuming that you have both the torque and power to drive them :D

Thanks Jonathon, I currently have 165/70R, so I can go anywhere in between 165 and 195 wide, but I wonder what ratio I could use... 165/70 = profile of 115mm, any idea what the max would be?

Probably 70-75's on wider tyres or 80's on the 165's

If you haven't seen it already this is a handy site. has calculators for rolling radius etc on it
