Steering Problems

Had a problem with the steering (?) last month which was tracked down to the rear axle being loose or so I thought. But the problem persisted so as I had collected the various bits I completely rebuilt the front suspension including new track rod ends. Fully checked the alignment - OK but still have the problem.
Static, there seems to be no play in the steering but on the move its like driving a thruppeny bit plus a quite pronounced pull to the left.
?steering rack - although as I said there seems to be no static play - everything else has been rebuilt. The manual does not give a lot of information about checking the rack
Am I missing something obvious? or do I need to bite the bulit and replace the rack?

When you say "Fully checked the alignment" did that include between front and back?
Might be worth taking to a garage that does 4 wheel alignment.

I can't remember the details of the previous postings but did you check that non of the wheels were buckled?

Is the rack securely bolted to the car - not moving side to side ? Is the pinch bolt at the base of the column - where it joins the rack - TIGHT? Quick check for alignment - dead straight plank of wood - hold it horizontally against the rear wheel (may need a spacer piece) pointing forwrads. Obviously - should point straight down the length of the car - if it's running in (or out) - this will show mis-alignment of rear axle. If it's like that - the car will 'crab' horribly! The rack itself can be removed - and then the track rod joints can be tightened up - and the steering damper adjusted to remove any play. That's all they do when they 'overhaul' them!
