diff ? or

Right i have a question
i have a 1275 lump that is fine with 1098 gear box and standard traveller diff it needs a 5th gear fitting but i have been told change the diff ?
now the question what diff will help me out as i ant got a clue
she is running on 13 inch wheels
i have thought about getting a mg gearbox but there are like rocking house stuff in good nick and cheap
need a cheap way out as the convertible still sitting in teh garage oh well

3.9 or 3.7

The 1098 box has a wider set of gears than the 1275 so is probably more suited to the Traveller with its extra weight, especially when you load it up. A 3.9 diff would be most suitable for all round use.
If you are going the 5 speed route then keep the standard 4.22 diff as the 5th gear will give you the high cruising gear.
You don't say what size tyres you have fitted to the 13" wheels.

Try for a 3.7 diff (later Midget/Riley 1.5) - but they tend to be expensive. Your 1275 will easily pull that ratio.

I'd also say 3.9 or 3.7 diff. With your 13" wheels the 3.7 would be my first choice.

The MG gearbox won't make any advantage to top gear as 4th gear ratio is the same.

Oh. I really dont know the prices for second hand parts...it is local though. I expect the ad for a 1275cc engine at £295 is a little steep then.

they normally go for around that figure and 3.7 will go for more

My 3.7 was £75 - in mid summer. Engine cost - will depend entirely on the condition of the engine! If it's all freshly reconditioned - rebored/new pistons - reground crank etc etc then it's a bargain. If it's just as it fell out of the MG - it may be needing all that work - and so would be very expensive.

at the mo ment the front wheels are 185 and rear will be getting 205s
so now need to look about then thanks lads
