There is nothing inadequate about a Smiths round heater. I have just completed a couple of sub-zero trips in My '58 soft top and all my passengers were quite comfortably warm and the screen was clear within a couple of minutes.
Fit a 88 degree thermostat and give the matrix a thorough flush. Job done.

I'll second that. I have to turn my heater off or open a window as it can get too hot inside (when the engine was in one piece of course )

I'll third that, the one in the green minor is great. It has the white cowling thing attached to the parcel shelf which helps direct the heat were you want it to go. It also helps that I fitted the radiator muff this week!!!

Unfortunately the round heater in Fenchurch is still pretty wimpy despite flushing the core, blowing compressed air through the fins, oiling the motor, cleaning the rheostat, etc. The later heater in Lintilla works far better (though the lack of door seals prevents the car getting really warm in this weather). Both cars have 88C thermostats.

The round heater was upgraded (under Morris) to have a switchable internal / external air intake - this allowed cold air to come in for the summer, and to close it off in winter.

The Austin folk were responsible for the later heater 'upgrade' as part of the standardisation program. It was a sad day when they lost the ability to close off the external air intake (when the forced air intake was added), but clever Morris owners have found a heath robinson way around that since day 1 (carrier bags block the pipe just as well as socks/ cloths etc...)
