Number Plates

Some cars have number plates painted on to their bonnets (btw im not thinking of doing this to a mog!), but is it legal???

surely it can't be as the speed cameras need to detect the plate and also it has to be easily read. Or do you mean they have plates and the number painted on the bonnet?

No, plates on the back, painted on the front......

Sports cars like small Lotuses (Loti?) often have plates painted on. I've seen E-types with them painted on the bonnet as well. You cannot buy the stick-on vinyl plates any more (as far as I know) so that could be a bit of a problem, but if the plate was put on the car years ago (honest, officer) then maybe it would be ok...? :?

i don't need to buy one i've got a friend who can make one..... but i saw a porche boxter with one yesterday.....yes officer it was put on in the 60's......

Aha... 
As long as it's legible, then I don't see how it could cause a problem. This morning, I saw a Mazda MX5 with a plate over the bonnet, and the normal mountings appeared to have been removed.

The details on the number plate should be clearly visible to
the police when standing at the same level as the car. It
depends if he is in a bad mood really......they quite often
stopped E-types.

ie when his feet are at the same level as the wheels, and standing at a sensible distance - say 10-15m????

To the best of my memory (which is failing these days),
The registration letters could be painted (in white) onto a "flat surface" which was black.
This let the frog-eyes and similar have the plat painted onto the bonnet (or rear end).
If the car doesn't qualify for the "classic"number plates, then it must follow the rules for reflective ones (I don't think you can get that reflective yellow as a paint!).
Trailer number plates are another kettle of fish...

No but that mini thinks it is, and you can see why the plates were moved from the original place with that sort of jump." I'm not a blooming pigeon"!!

It's my fave picture of a Morris Mini Minor ever. The other austin style mini pic was just to show my point that i found on the net. I couldn't find a clear face on pic of a Minor with a bonnet plate, untill I actually looked more closer to home on this website!
