The £20ish Ebay black & aluminium ones are likely to be laminated (made of 2 layers). That's not a big problem, but you have to be more careful when drilling through them.

What was "proper" would depend on the year of registration. Pressed ally ones are cheaper than the raised plastic digits which also come in 2 different sizes ;-)

Depending on the year, the plastic letters may have been original fit... and the last 3 or 4 years had white/amber plates. In the early 70's the balck plates were still legal, but 'very naff' as they looked old fashioned.

However fashion now dictates that the black/aluminium is more popular.

One thing I forgot to mention - if the plates are for aMinor saloon, the rear plate needs to be a special size (smaller and without the border) to allow it to fit in the bootlid recess properly.

There are people who obtain them for just the price of a screwdriver (Assuming they haven't pinched that too  ).

Can you still get self ahhesive ones? My Midget has one on the (Rubber)front bumper. The reason was that when BL fitted the large bumper, it blocked much of the air intake. The new air intake below the bumper was in turn blocked by the number plate (No wonder 1500s were prone to overheat  ). When I fitted mine twenty years ago, I just bought the backing and the letters and made it myself.

A '56 would have the larger digits and I would assume be 3 letters followed by 3 numbers. The '67 could have originally have been fited with the modern white / yellow plates or if not would have been the pressed alluminium type with the smaller digits. I know for sure you can get the pressed alluminium ones in the smaller sized plate but I'm not sure if the larger raised digit plates are available with the smaller backing. They can, of course, be trimmed to fit with snips and a file though if need be.

Hi
You could try these, they seem to know what they are talking about.

I changed the original plastic digit plates I had on my 1970 saloon for the pressed aluminum, and I must say they look pretty neat.

Good luck

A decent number plate supplier will be able to do the correctly shaped ones for the boot lid (Tippers vintage plates or Framptons for example), but easy enough trim them down if you use a cheaper supplier. Pre 1963 should be 3 1/2" high digits whilst later cars are smaller 3 1/8" digits to get the extra year letter in. No reason why you can't have earlier plates done with later smaller letters though, just depends if you're fussed about it looking correct....
The cheap ebay £20 laminated pressed ali ones are fine, as Ray says be careful when drilling them and they tend to start delaminating if they get bent or knocked, but good value really.

Yes, Canley Classics bought the rights to the name when that well know supplier of ours was sold off earlier in the year....
