Could someone kindly advise me on two service questions. Firstly what is the best oil to put in my 1960 million engine, I saw some classic car oil in Halfords? and I also need to put some oil in the dashpot plunger - what type goes in here, many thanks Stephen.

the classic car oil you saw in halfords will do the job, 3-in-1 oil in the carb dashpot is also good.

I use 20W 50 engine oil for the engine.. I have some Duckhams in at the moment, but I think the supermarkets do a cheaper variant that does the same job.

You can also order the correct dashpot oil from most traders. I do that now, but in the past used engine oil, and it never seemed to do any harm.

3 in 1 is fine in the carb! For the engine 20W50 - ASDA and Morrisons stuff is fine for a Minor. Just don't expect it to last for ever. More importantly -when changing the filter - make SURE the flat plate and spring are present and correct below the filter element. Many are not - thrown away maybe years ago with the old filter - and since then the oil has not been filtered!

i found that my moggy didnt have a plate or spring beneath the filter element, so i used the oil trower plate from inside the timing chain cover and half a valve spring, not exactly the right bits, bit it does the job for the time being

That's what I like - improvisation!

All to many filters have been ruined this way -well done with that imporovisation - BUT - does the plate completely seal the bottom of the filter ? Surely the thrower plate has a large hole in the centre ? If so - It wont be sealing the filter = no filtering taking place!
