When you push the clutch down there is a noise?
Can you feel it through the pedal?
Does it continue after the clutch is lifted?

hi Marky,
the noise starts when the pedal is depressed. I can't feel it through the pedal, it stops when the clutch is lifted. it's also in time with the engine if that helps

Worn out thrust bearing ? Need to look inside the bellhousing. Otherwise - could be clutch plate coming adrift at the centre piece.

It does sound like some part of the clutch has failed.
Does the noise start as soon as you press the clutch, or only when it's fully depressed?
Has the clutch been worked on or disturbed as part of other work on the car?
I think you get these symptoms if the clutch plate is fitted the wrong way round.

Hi,
This sounds similar to problems I had. In the end one of the springs had broken in the clutch mechanism. Whilst it worked for considerable time and didn't actually fail, I wouldn't advise this.

Yes - that's the most likely explanation - can happen especially if the clutch has been 'over travelled'. Not much hope of fixing it with key-hole surgery - but might be worth a try!
