Been using my minor recently ( 1098 engine) and its only getting like 10 mpg, so im really worried that its gonna bankrupt me! But I have done one thing to try sought it, I ajdusted the mixture nut ( Done it up till the engine started to die then undone a tad) It was running quite rich i think so I shall go to the fuel station and fill the tank and see if its made a diffrence, adjusting the nut also cut the smoke out so hopefully 2 birds with 1 stone! I'm just asking, is there anyhting else I can do to make it better on fuel, like any other mixture screws etc,
Thanks danny

Make sure the suction chamber piston is free and returns down with a 'clunk' (inside the large aluminium dome) - you might have to remove the air filter to get your finger in to lift it,
Is the air filter clean?

Sounds like you have done the right thing, even heavy footed you should get better than 30 mpg - more like 40 if you try hard.

Around town I used to get anything down to 20mpg, and only 30mpg with a fair bit of open road mixed in.

I am on my 4th Minor now (all 1098's) and they all did about 38mpg which is what the book says they do.....something or things are badly wrong to get only 10mpg Dan. Corroded tank? Leaking fuel pipe? Leaking from the float chamber? I think you are dripping fuel somewhere

Exhaust smoking! Check the air filter! Mine was like that when I bought it, ran out of fuel 1 mile from the only 4 star petrol supplier in Essex!
If not, and the jet tweaking hasn't done the trick, could be float level too high/ holed, or poorly seating float valve.

10 mpg is desperate - make sure the choke is not sticking on - and the brakes aren't binding! Take the car for a good run - then pop out a spark plug for inspection. It should be light beige colour, if black = too rich, and if pure white = too weak!

The black smoke from the exhaust was the clue but I didn't think it would be possible for it to be so bad as to give 10mpg !!!

So, if it's 10 times better - you're getting 100 mpg!! Wow!
