A Viva in a breakers yard..??? on top of a Rover P6..???

Found out that there is a great breakers up the road from where I live, got a load of old cars there. They have the largest collection of Jags I've ever seen, all models and marks....

It was nice to walk around a breakers like the ones I remember......

Thats not just a Viva its a much rarer Viva estate, witness the tailgate sticking up at the back!
I used to visit a scrapyard near Burtonwood airbase with my dad and that was full of Ex american servicemens big old yank tanks, all dream machines these days but just great playthings for a 10 year old.
I must admit I miss old style hands on scrappies.

Are there any scrappies that let you have a wander around any more? Someone said on here that there's some EU directive that makes this illegal or something - is this true?

It just seems like such a shame. It was only a few years ago (about 2003) that I wandered aroud a scrappy round my way to find parts for my G reg fiesta.

Health and Safety directive EU 1234 Blah blah blah- sharp objects, risk of injury, falling metal objects, operating machinery,etc etc.
Eventually we won't be able to go to Tescos without safety shoes,hard hat & goggles in case a Crunchie falls off the shelf. Nanny State !!!:roll:

Most of the scrapyards around here are are full of run of the mill stuff from about 2002 and before. In lots of cases, the bodies don't look too bad. I suspect that in most cases, a "Black box" has packed up and the replacement will cost more than the value of the car. Modern cars are very much white goods on wheels.

My next door neighbour has just bought a 55 plate Golf. Although retired, he helps out in a local garage, who put him on to the car. It was a "Category D" insurance write off. It has 40000 on the clock and the damage was a missing front bumper and a broken engine mounting (I'm guessing it had left the road but not really hit anything) and a scratch on the rear bumper. Now repaired, (Visually) the car now looks in very good order and I find it hard to see why it should have been a write off (That said, I wouldn't want it - I think if you can find the engine you win a prize - and what other damage will come to light; has the engine had a wallop?).

We mustn't forget the scrappage scheme and the effect that has had. However to comment further might involve comment on government policy, which is apparently "Political".

The yard I sometimes use for bits for my van still lets people wander round. No kids allowed in though which is fair enough.

A shame to see those cars, the P6 especially, they are one of the best cars made.

my local scrappy allows me walk around.. trouble is it is only new stuff

Sad to see the demise of so many cars. I passed my test in a Triumph Toledo. Not many of those around now (mostly Dolomite sports versions)

love the Renner 12 (?) next to the toledo - amazing how the headlight holes have survived - maybe they weren't such rust buckets after all!

Take a closer look at this photo from a different part of the yard... How many Renaults are there..????

I count 11 cars in that picture. Not sure if they are all renaults tho....

I don't see any Toledo's - A couple of Dolomites and a Triumph 1300 in there though....

The one on the ground under the FWD is a 1300 Dolly, about as close as it gets to a Toledo here.
