For the £5 fee I received print outs showing all previous owners and their addresses, going back to 1968 when my car was first registered. Took about 6 weeks for the details to arrive. Bear in mind that the owners may have changed addresses though - the DVLA will only provide the address held at the time, not current addresses of previous owners.

Hi Louise, my son is trying to recover a personalised number from the person he sold the vehicle to, do DVLA require a genuine/valid reason to provide such details please ?

Charlie, If you (or your son) want the DVLA to provide the keeper details of a vehicle that is not registered to yourself you will have to provide "reasonable cause" for needing the informaton.

Thanks Louise, just what I suspected, any idea how far 'reasonable cause' extends ? there must be some official criteria.

Each case is considered individually but they have to take into account Data Protection laws. Probably best to contact them and provide as much information as possible and see what they say. Here's a link to the DVLA site covering the types of enquiry that might fall within 'reasonable cause':

And a useful moral to be drawn from Charlie's half of this thread: when you sell a car, always keep a copy of the V5 before you send it off. I scan and save, just in case there's any problem, like DVLA not acknowledging that they've received the form.

Thanks Louise, the DVLA site is excellent & have saved it to Favourites. I think 'kennatt' could stand a chance if he emphasises the clasic car aspect, in my case I think no chance. Good advice from Kevin too. :)
