EMP Survivability

This topic came up during a recent discussion with some of my sci-fi fan friends. Basically the conversation went something like " After an EMP, we'd all be walking". I said "Not me, I'd just get in the moggy and drive everywhere" as there are no electronics/computers etc (thank god). A robust discussion ensued. Would a moggy survive an Electro-Magnetic Pulse, any experts out there?

The only component I'd worry about would be the diodes in the alternator.
Dynamo would just shrug it off.
The radio would pack up but so would the radio stations so no great loss there.

woldnt the electronic bits in the dizzy (condensor) and in the fuel pump (if its electric) pack up?

You wouldn't get any fuel for it , as the pumps would be out of action.plus the roads would be littered with dead moderns.

Would the Coil Be affected?
In terms of the petrol pumps not working, I'm sure there would be ways and means of getting the stuff out of the underground tanks....

As I understand it, simple things like coils and condensors wouldn't be affected (they're more 'electrical' than 'electronic') it's the clever but delicate stuff like transistors that get whacked. Nothing in an SU fuel pump to suffer, but if you've upgraded to a modern electronic one, then you might be walking!

Just nick the petrol from all the dead moderns. Fill some gerry cans up and put them on the back seat.
Then drive to wherever Holly Willoughby lives, and woo her with your flash motor that actually moves.
Yeah, that'll work. She won't be able to resist. Problem is, my Moggie isn't even a runner. Hmmm, but there's an Anglia around the corner. Yeah, I could nick that, then make the trip to get Holly. But it's a Ford - Holly's better than that.
Hmmm.

They'd probably fare better than we think. The fact it's wrapped up in the car body would help, and the diodes in the alternator may be OK as they aren't affected as much as transistors or complex ICs. yes, the radio wouldn't have a very high survival chance.
Do you have inside info, should I be stockpiling tinned food and filling containers with water? Is it time to whitewash the windows and retreat to a safe room?
Like the Holly Willoughby aspect. Creating an opportunity out of a crisis. Smmmoooooooth.

Hmmm.
A queue of Minors outside her house, with blokes fighting each other with starting handles like gladiators to woo her.
She'd find us irresistible!!

Boy, that's a vision of the post-apocalyptic world that Hollywood hasn't even considered as a possibility. I think the re-make of Mad Max should have Morris Minors and nothing else.

More of a job for the Ealing studios than Hollywood.
Peeved Peter rather than Mad Max perhaps.
I only suggested the alternator diodes as they are the closest thing to electronics I could think of, and they can be damaged by electric welding if left connected.

Until the singing/dancing part, and then you'd all be a driving home again.

I'd never heard about her until now. Quick goolgle search and I'm glad I now have
