The rocker cover on my new car hasn't got a breather on it. I have a spare rocker cover with a breather. What would be the benefits (if any) of fitting the spare?

Fit it - It will help keep the oil in the engine...

Need to get a piece of pipe to go between the breather and the air filter first.

Any bit of pipe will do as long as the diameter is correct - It's not made of anything special....

I know that but I don't have anything to put on it - well maybe I have if I have a poke around at the back of the shed

Earlier engines vented from the rocker box to the air filter, 1098s from the tappet chest to the atmosphere and 1275s from the timing chain cover to the carbs.
If you have not got a breather pipe in the rocker box then you should have one of the other arrangements which should do the job.

The rocker breather is by far the best arrangement - fit it!
