can anyone shed any light on this

my numberplate is four numbers and two letters 2673 PU, normally there is three letter indicating area of origin and not two. friend thinks its a irish plate?

any ideas?

Perfectly normal British number. I'm sure someone will be along to tell you approx year and region but it obviously predates the 3 letter variations

Mine had a similar number before a P.O sold it! Mine was BY which is Croydon Think yours is an Essex plate....maybe?

Yes, it's definately from Essex as my grandad's traction engine (registered in Essex) had a PU number.

Peter Unwin - born 2 June 1973 wants that plate! And will pay well for it!

There is a registration identification table on the Series MM website under car identification http://seriesmm.mmoc.org.uk. PU is Essex

You could transfer it - howls of anguish from the purists - if the car is MOTd and taxed.

Correct me if I'm wrong somebody, but I've been told in the past that registrations with 4 numbers and 2 letters were issued in 1961 and '62 as they were running out of 3 letters 3 number combinations. My Morris was first registered with the mark 2855 LJ in April 1961. All the other cars I've seen with similar registrations were all from '61 and '62. Is yours from this era by any chance?

Well - I used to have a '61 Mini with XXXX SM and a '63 Landy with XXXX SR. Stupidly let the numbers get away !

My cars have both lost their original plates now but they were:

1961 - 3899 FH
1963 - 5190 PJ

I never thought about that but it's likely your theory is correct.

3 letter marks were used after the 2 letter one ran out. Different areas ran out at different times. Some never got to using 3 letters, and were still issuing 2 letter marks until the end of 1964
