My mate has just got his restored Sprint running today which is quite quiet, except when the clutch is released! it then has a whirring drone!
Does anyone know if these boxes are prone to this? - sounds like layshaft bearings or first motion shaft gears.
Are parts common with other units?

I had this on a Dolly 1850, it was the thrust bearing in the end....

If you mean - gearbox in neutral and the clutch pedal NOT pressed - then yes it could well be the release bearing just lightly touching the pressure plate. Is the gearbox oil correct level and type?
These gearboxes are plentiful and generally unwanted - we don't use them on our TR7s!

Yes, in neutral, pedal not pressed - quite a drone, sounds too heavy and deep for a thrust bearing (which is new) I assume he has the correct oil in it. Sound goes when pedal pressed. Were different oils specified? I dont know what it should be.

is it the overdrive box? i had a vauxhall viva hb gt with the vx4/90 overdrive box fitted, and that droned when in neutral but when the pedal was pressed it stopped, turns out it was the bearings in the overdrive unit i had the unit reconed and it was fine after that

Yes, it has the overdrive unit fitted. Will have to get under while it's doing it to try and pin point it. Thanks
