hi everyone
ive got a black 1957 moggy and would like to know what the paint code is for it?????????
i ask this because i painted my kick plates in halfords gloss black and it seems lighter

Andrew, the BMC paint code for black is BK1, the same shade was used all through minor production.
You'll be surprised how different some shades of black can be...

when you look at the bit ive painted it sorts of have a browny tint to it
i think my cars 2pack does it make any different between celly and 2 pack. will the paint code be the same in celly aswell as 2pack?????

The paint codes will be the same, but of course different types of paint will have a different shine to them, also older paint is likely to be slightly faded so may come out different. Although there isn't AS much variation between black shades you still can't expect a halfords spray can to come out the same colour as the morris paint.

I have the same problem with my 1954 Rover P4
Not found a decent match, repairs look ok until you get in direct sunlight.
All the backs I have tried seem to have a brown tint
I even went to a paint supplier with the car, but he said all he could do was give me the blackest black which is no better
I've resorted to using those £2 Simonize aerosols from autojumbles which are no worse than than the dearer alternatives and at least can be used to build up a thickness of paint, hoping one day I will find a match
There are dealers on ebay selling jet black cellulose, but I have not tried any

i see where ur coming from with the halfords spray can
luckily my dad used to be in body shop and has got a decent finish from spray cans. do u know if you can get these in spray cans and if so where to get them from????????

did u see a program called chop shop where them made a replica jet one car out of it.???
put it into google images and its a green replica

Use the darkest undercoat (ie maroon/brown) before spraying black. I'm sure I have also seen a trick somewhere - where red gloss is sprayed on before black. Your 2 pack car will likely have lacquer final coat too - may be worth trying.

Hmm - not sure - but if it looks un-naturally 'glassy' that would be a clue!

the reason i ask about the black paint is becasue of painting a white glass fibre sunvisor.

If you can find an area of paint that will not show you could try a rag with cellulose thinners on it and see if the paint softens if it does it will either be cellulose or possibly synthetic. If you polish with cutting compound a laquer finish will not colour the cloth,

when i tcutted the car the cloth was black. so no laquer im guessing.
but i still cant work out why the halfords paint has a slight brown tint aparently its common??

Yes there are lots of shades to black, when we mix black for cars there are a lot of different tinters that can be added blues, reds, greens, yellows, other blacks and even whites if I recall, sometimes there may be four or five different tinters in the one colour, even seen metalllic tinters in such minute amounts you could not see the metallic even in strong sunlight.There was a Honda blue that was a metallic clear over base that for all intents looked like a straight blue. You should see if you can get a super black which used to be the blackest black but not normally in aerosol form
