Lead paint is not used these days - health worries! Could never really understand how it was supposed to be a 'preservative/preventive' paint anyway. There are various threads on this - but etch primer/zinc rich primer etc will all come into it! many of course will swear by slapping POR15 over everything first! Generally - bare meatl should be treated with a rust killer - such as Jenolite - most of which contain phosphoric acid. You could just try washing it over with cheap Cola!

On the subject of rust killers a friend uses Fertan on his steel barge and reports good results - unusually contains tannic acid whereas most of them seem to be phosphoric acid based. Anyone tried it?
