MG Midget parts?

Post by croft »

I have been offered a MG Midget, failed its Mot with lots of rust!!! I was wondering if any of the parts would be useful for a Minor? I guess the engine would be worth having but would there be anything else?

What year is it? I can't rember all the details of whats swappable, but assuming its an A Series, not the later triump engined job (in which case theres not really anything)

Engine, gearbox and diff are swappable (Diff is a 3.9 I think) front brakes can be made to fit but are not the easiest of conversions

If its an A series engine I could find a good home for the engine and box

I believe that the steering rack can be turned upside down for a LHD Minor. There are one or two people doing LHD conversions.

If it is a later one with over drive you could try fitting the gearbox, a few have....

But it won't fit an A series engine - not easily anyway!
A series engine /box /diff are all worth having for a Minor. The rear axle is narrower - but the diff is the same - even on the later Triumph engined cars - in fact - that's the much wanted 3.7 diff!

MG Midgets were never available with overdrive. Not even the rubber bumper ones which had Triumph Spitfire 1500 engines and boxes. The overdrive was only offered on the Spitfire.

In the MG range it was the MGB that had overdrive.

IF its a pre '63 it has a 948 engine which is the same as the 948 minor engine except with twin carbs, diff ratio = 4.22

If its '63 - 67 is 1098cc but a stronger engine than the minor one with 2" main bearings. Diff Ratio is still 4.22

'67 - 74(ish) 1275cc engine with 3.9 diff

'74ish (introduction of rubber bumpers) - end of production 1500cc triumph unit with 3.9 diff until the last 2-3 years of production it got the 3.7 diff.

The diffs can all go into the minor axle, but the spridget axle is narrower so wont go straight on to the minor. The engines and gearboxes will fit without modifications except the 1500 units from the rubber bumper variants - which are no better than the 1275 engines.

As said the steering rack can be used in the opposite hand drive minor. It should have a rev counter that will work - but make sure its the same earth as your car.

There are a couple of other odds n sods like the ignition barrel but thats about it!
