I've noticed a rattle coming from the front of the engine. It is most noticeable when idling but is present at all speeds just masked by other noises. It isn't the tappets. It isn't a knocking. I'm worried it may be the timing chain. I checked the fan to make sure it isn't catching on something and it is not.

However whilst checking the fan I noticed there was some play on the waterpump pulley. Just a slight amount of "end float" if you like. Is this normal or could this be where the rattle is eminating from? I've not had the chance to remove the fan belt and see if the rattle persists, that is my next task when I can get back outside but regardless of that, do I need a new water pump?

Timing chains are definately prone to rattle especially if they are not modified to take a tensioner. They do seem to go on forever rattling though without any damage. Check out the Mini spares places for tensioner conversion kits. Slight end float is probably OK on water pump but I wouldn't expect to see a lot of play. If it was excessive I would expect the pump to leak too.

Can't see any signs of leakage but there were a few drops of coolant in the drip tray this morning so it must be coming from somewhere. The water pump pulley can be rocked slightly. I think I'll change it when I come to do the engine bay. I was thinking of putting in a duplex timing chain when I come to taking things apart.

Winter/Spring project is to strip and clean the engine bay, and replace anything that appears worn, repaint the engine and a general spruce up so whilst I'm in there I may as well do the water pump and consider the timing chain.

Consider the Mini single row chain - with rubber tensioner - rather than the duplex chain. It's really only needed if using high lift cam and/or daft super strong valve springs! I wouldn't worry too much about the chain rattling - however - someone on here a while back had the chain break! So they don't really 'go on for ever'.

Hi Stuart when checking cars into our rally you would be surprised how many cars have timing chain rattle, next time you are at event just listen to the arriving cars and you will be surprised.
If you are taking your water pump off and going to do the bypass hose as a matter of course, don't bother with one of those bellows type as they are not that long lasting, just use a piece of heater hose of the right length and it will last for donkey's years.
