I'm just about to replace the rear side window with a new sealing rubber.
Question is do you need to use a sealing compound and if so what sort?.

The existing rubber has perished but there was some softish sealer stuck on the glass, which I have cleaned off. Looked a bit like Sikoflex?.

Someone will tell you for sure but it might depend on the condition of the window aperture.

The aperture is pretty good, remarkably good to be honest.

It shouldn't need anything (just make sure the glass is 'squeeky clean' first) - I've found doing windscreens that they sometimes leak a little - in which case a quick squirt of 'seaking sealer' (Captain Tolley's) soon sorts them out. Using Sikoflex or silicone is more of a 'bodge solution, but almost certainly does the trick!

The original "sealer" used was Dum Dum - looks rather like black plasticine. A small sausage of this run along the channel before the rubber strip is put in. Available in a tin from all morris suppliers.

OK, I will look out for some Dum Dum, though it's all fairly clean and smooth so I imagine it would be fine without if I can't find any locally.

I've fitted with and without the sealer you mention. With - seals fine, Without - loose window and leaks - had to redo.
Use a proper sealant material designed for car windows - check ebay for suppliers.
