New Timing Cover

Post by David53 »

Well, I have fitted the new Mini timing chain cover and rubber seal. I fitted the seal tapping gently with a wooden block. I fitted the new oil thrower (flat type) fitted gasket which was coated with Hylomar sealant then bolted on with a few bolts loosely. Thanks fo RogerRust and BMC's advice I greased the pulley hub and the seal liberally and fitted the pulley, then turned it over a few times slowly before bolting up the cover. Then took the pulley off again to tighten the lower nolts.

I did follow Roger's advice about being careful tightening the bolts but even so have managed to strip the smaller one shown here (That's not a crack leading from it BTW just a flake of paint!)

As it is right next to a larger one I am going to assume it will be OK. All the other bolts are tight and firm. The Mini cover also has a ridge around the edge which I think will help the sealing. I guess I could just replace the bolt as I assume it is the bolt that would have stripped not the plate. Anyone know the thread size of this one?

It will be the plate that has stripped - it's 1/4" UNF. Don't worry about it! There should be lozenge shaped spreader washers under the small screws? You should really have left the pulley ON when doing the final tightening - and why the Hylomar ??? No need for any sticky paste. Main Q is - is it now oil tight! ?

That hole goes all the way through the plate so a longer bolt with a nut could be used if it does leak.

Just room for a narrow nut so will do that.

The Hylomar just helps seal the gasket, as well as helping to position on the block.

Pulley was on when I tightened all nuts except the very bottom two - could not get at them properly with pulley on, but I'm sure the cover wouldn't have moved.

Just waiting to fit up the repaired Dizzy and will test run. Also going to replace the bypass hose as per your suggestion :-)
