Ebay payment by Paypal

It has been suggested to me by a seller that if I make payment via Paypal as a gift his fees are avoided. Is this true? Apart from sounding frauulent, would I pick up the fees instead does anyone know?

the buyer pays nothing in fees anyway

The only thing I would add that if there is a problem with the item purchased eg it doesn't arrive, is damaged or not as described you would normally be protected by Paypal and be able to raise a dispute. If the money is sent as a 'gift' you won't be able to complain if there's a problem!

If it's an ebay sale - just click and pay as per the site. The fees are his problem - and as above - you get good protection. Don't risk that to save him a few pennies - and you nothing!

as u all know i sell a lot on ebay
both parties are covered when paid with paypal , and i would say pay within ebay rules
tho paypal do take a high percentage of the sale price, its not exactly just a few pennies either

Too right I sell an awfull lot on ebay too and the fees are outragous, far higher than using a card machine. I tried a few years ago to get customers to ring with their card No. but the level of trust people have on ebay scuppered that plan and now of course you are forced to accept paypal !!!!
As far as paying "as a gift" it is correct that you lose the ebay protection but thats only up to £500 so if its for more you are best off collecting the item and paying cash as then you know what you are getting.
I would love to know how much they make in a year wouldn't you?

I know it doesn't always work but I generally put in my listing 'cheque preferred' I think most people would rather not line PayPals pockets!

I sent money via Paypal to a private seller, at his request I marked it as a "gift" so he wouldn't have to pay fees.
But, I had to pay a fee, it was only $1.25 so I wasn't too overwhelmed by extra costs.

I've had to pay fees for sending money as a gift. Maybe if the money had already been in my paypal balance it would have been different?
Ebay fees + paypal fees do make it an expensive place to sell, however it still is a very very good way to sell stuff (as long as you are a bit street wise)

If you send money as a "Personal Payment Owed" neither side pays any fees ;)
