What is this? will it be any good for my 1098??

I think it may infact be a 12G940... its hard to tell when you blow the image up in Photoshop, but i think thats what it reads.

If this is the case, then (without opening up the previous debacles) what is the correct number of bolts 9 or 11? or does it not matter?

It certainly looks like a 940
Most (all?) of the 12G940 will be 9 bolt.
11 bolts heads are useful on a race specification / highly tuned engine as the loads will be higher and so will the heat! On mildly tuned engines, 11 bolts is a bit of overkill.

Be a bit carefull with that head as there is surface rust on the rocker assembly mounting pads so it looks like it has been left unprotected for a long time.
(Does it have any burned valves?) He doesn't say that the head is 'good' or that it runs without excesive smoke (worn valve stems / valve guides).

Just out of interest, if it has 11 bolt holes chances are it's from a late cooper s, I'm not sure if the late sprites had 11. The 11th was a bolt rather than a stud and only had a torque of 25 ft lb.

my 67 sprite has 9..... (i think)
