worn out carburettor threads on my midget

Post by ssnjimb »

Hi Folks

The twin su hs2's on my mg midget are running ok with the exception of one problem

The threads for the saucepan air filters are worn and subsequently they keep working loose.

What are my options on this

Jamie

Re cut the threads I guess or replace the bolts but as I can't picture what you are talking about I can't help anymore. Post a pic and I'll try again :-)

Yep - recut the threads either the same size or the next size up and use the corresponding bolts to the new thread size or nut and bolt straight through if there is room behind for the nut or if not too badly worn try some Loctite thread lock on the bolts to see if it will hold them in place....

Well - someone must have stripped them! They should be 5/16" UNC. You could use longer bolts - and add nuts - or just tap out to next size - maybe 8mm metric will work ? 'Saucepan' filters are useless anyway - too close to the mouth of the carb - they obstruct the air flow.

Hello Jamie,

recoil kits are cheap and effective. Most stockists normally keep metric but they are available in imperial also, so try the internet for a supplier?
It is usually a lot of hassle to go the next size up or even go to metric.

An excellent supplier of all things associated with metalworking is www.jlindustrial.co.uk They will even send you a free 1300 page catalogue! Mine is a bit out of date, but a 5/16" unc helicoil tap is listed at £5.89, a pack of 10 inserts (the thread repair part) is £3.88. You will need an insertion tool, which doesn't seem listed, but very easy to improvise.
They also list the complete "kit" with all tools included and 20 inserts, for about £30....

I would to eventually change to a different type of filter like k and n filters. i assume those original stlye saucepans are restrictive which is not helpfull in such a car.

Thankyou for your help

It's a whole lot of hassle to start 'recoiling' them. Surely you can just ise nuts on the bolts? Go for 5/16 UNF if you must - rather suspect that's what has happened anyway!

Usually plenty left over - each time I do a job on the car !
Got a BIG box of them now!!

But for simple stuff like that - you will get metric in B&Q etc. They won't be high tensile - but ok for holding on air filters!

Hello jamie,

it's up to you whether you bodge it or do it correctly and have a better result?
