Steampunk.

I've seen people mention it a few times here on this forum, and I was wondering as to who knows exactly what it is.
I've been into it for a good few years now, and am pondering adding such touches to my car (when she's done!)

As my own steampunk persona (as elected by my crew of friends) is a rather befuddled airship captain, I was going to look at this theme - possibly get myself a nice airship inspired steering wheel and some odd door handles.

What do you guys think?

Ironically, my other half suggested that if we're still in the UK and can convince a gang of people to do it, we should do Pride again in 2010... and she then suggested steampunk-ing Rebecca-Mog.

This, of course, is an excellent plan - so I'm intrigued to see what you have in mind for limegreen. I don't know that I'll do it though, because both Prides, so many people dropped out - the last one, it was just my car, which was dead popular (and I quite like being the centre of attention), but was a bit sad in terms of a parade ;)

Maybe - I would need to wear my hat back to front - perhaps that would qualify ?
TBH Never heard of anything so ridiculous in all my life!

Not sure about the culture side of it, by I do like the look.
It is the antithesis of modern thinking with clean lines and uncluttered surfaces.
When I see modern interior design it never looks like anywhere for actual human beings to live especially me because I'm not naturally tidy.

isn't that the point? or are you being ironic and it has gone straight over my head?

I would say it is utterly harmless, and I like the look of brass and wood.
I save my ridicule for things that are damaging and/or stupid.

As I recall, punks were big into safety pins and spikey or Mohican hair. Maybe if you put some safety pins through your overalls, when you're on the locomotive, you too could be a "Steam punk"??

As for me, I don't have the hair for it.

A lot of people do go way too far into the culture side - I'm more into the look of the trinkets and such.

I must have a sheltered existence. I work with teenagers most days and they talk a foriegn language when thay are not texting or on MSM which is bad enough. Steampunk just doesn't do anything for me.

Well I'm supposed to be a 'youngster' and most of the time what my peers are saying looses me. I'm told I've been born generations too late

I had a vague idea of what steampunk was about before reading the wiki article just then, and now I'm even more confused!

My understanding was that it was a vision of what the world would be like if steam was still our primary source of power with steam powering pretty much everything - yet modern technology existed. Although it seems I may have gotten the wrong end of the stick a little bit.

Regardless of the nature of the beast (which I do find quite an intriguing notion) I love the ingenuity that goes into some of the steam punk "artefacts" - I recently saw a steampunk'd laptop that looked SUPERB and some of the fashion statements appeal in an odd kinda way too (not that I would ever actually wear them, I'm not that ridiculous!)

I'd describe it as very "Myst", if anyone on here remembers the computer and console based adventure games of that name which span mid '90's to '00's.

Looks nice but, as with most things, can be taken too far.
