Insurance renewal came in for the modern car - phoned up MORE TH>N to ask if there was anything we could do to drop the cost. Straight away was offered £20 off. If you don't ask - you don't get!

Well done BMC but if you haven't already phone up a few others as you may be able to reduce it a bit more.

We have done this twice quite recently with the house insurance who gave us £30 off just for a phone call and to keep our business and the AA Breakdown Recovery was reduced by £43.00. On both occasions I got quotes before calling up so that I something to compare.

It annoys me a bit because if they gave you the lowest quote in the first place I would think more of them and they wouldn't need anyone sitting answering phone calls to re-quote on a policy they have already quoted on - but I guess they rely on 50% of folk being too lazy to bother and they just keep on paying the direct debit. Now we challenge every quote we get and compare them with what other companies have to offer. I'll step off my soap box now.

Because my dear wife had a wee parking scrape with the car last year - I really can't change insurers (no-claims protected 'for life' with MORE TH>N) - and the price is actually very good anyway. I also queried how much it would be without Roadside - and another £33 came off the premium! I then purchased the exact same level of Roadside from GreenFlag for £18:90.

Every year I shop around for the best price as my insurance issues have now been resolved thank god (False claim, affecting no less than 4 insurance renewals) I'm in a position to do so and play the system a bit "Oh, really thats a shame, I really liked being with you but xyz have an equivalent policy at £xxx and then 9/10 they will get pretty close...

I'm very very happy with the service i've recieved from my current insurance co - Admiral - so have no intention to move when renewal time comes but I WILL be playing the system to get the best price from them!

Try the comparison websites - even when renewing your existing policy at the same broker! These sites can offer a better price than going direct. Somehow this seems crazy as going via an agent (with commission) should be more expensive...
However many companies realise that unless they offer additional discounts on comparison sites, they will loose custom to the competition.

If you want a more reasonable quote from your current insurer try their web site but misspell your surname by one letter.
Then phone them with the quote you get and say you made a mistake, will they honour the quote?
You will soon see how much they value new customers over existing ones, or how much they are trying to crank your premium up by.

try their web site
Having done that myself last year I was a little peeved to find that most insurers offer cheaper prices via the comparison sites compared to going direct to their own site!

Since then I've had 2 crashes in 12 months... protected no claims is one thing, but getting a good insurance quote now is a different thing!

I would imagine protected no claims is ok only if the company avoid putting next years premium up, under some other guise. This would leave you at their mercy, as I presume another company would not accept the first ones protected clause if you were to change.
