Just a quick question,when greasing the king pins is it done with the wheels on and the car on the ground or with the wheels removed and the car on axle stands and the suspension just hanging down ie without the cars weight on it.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong but I usually grease the kingpins with the car on stands and wheels off as this improves access.

Also don't forget to do the track rod ends, propshaft UJ's and hand brake cables if they have nipples fitted on the them(some are sealed units)

You need to support the car and remove the wheels to give yourself proper access and so that you can see the fresh grease coming out of the rubber seal on the other end of the trunnion.
When you grease the hand brake cables give a couple of squirts of oil to the inner cable where it comes out of the outer cable by the back brakes.
This stops the end of the cable rusting and fraying, a common cause of faulty hand brake operation.

I usually smear it with a big dollop of grease there!

I've read somewhere and it makes sense to me that the weight of the car needs to be removed from the kingpins but keep the torsion par loaded. That means support the car under the the lower arm out towards the wheel. This takes the load off the mating surfaces of the thread that carry the load and allows the most amount of fresh grease to enter.

Jaekl, that's the CORRECT procedure. Hope everyone follows it

Just pump in grease and twiddle the wheel from side to side. It will find it's way round the threads - don't worry!
