Am going to replace my timing chain cover with a mini one tomorrow, so have the cover and new rubber seal.

Dumb question - does the seal go in with the open side facing front or back?

the open side faces the oil. So it's flat side out.

By the way you will need to centralise the oil seal on the shaft what this means is fit the seal to the cover and make sure its central by fitting the cover loosely and rotating the shaft a bit before you tighten it up to ensure its exactly central. You will need to temporarily fit the pulley then take it off when you have tightened the bolts you can get to so you can tighten the bottom ones. If you don't do this it will probably leak.

By the way be very gentle with the bolts as they do strip very easily!

Make sure the 'oil thrower' is on right way round. Not sure if the one from the 'felt' seal will be ok with the rubber seal - probably is - but just check it's not rubbing before you close everything up. Also - smear some grease around the rubber seal lips on first installation.

I swapped a felt seal for a rubber seal many years ago after leaving an oil slick from mid Wales to Andover. Can't remember having any problems and it cured the leak.
Now can anyone recommend a replacement for those bits of oily rope on the Series MM timing chain cover/sump that call themselves an oil seal?

Is this for a Side Valve engine Mike ?
