Engine Weight

Can anyone tell me off the top of their heads what an A series engine weighs? I want to remove the engine without caving in the roof of my garage.

948cc = 245lbs
1098cc = 252lbs
Suggest you take head off prior to lifting out and that with reduce weight.

If you've still got the gearbox attached that's another 44lbs. MikeN.

Thats about the same weight as me. So get another fat bloke to stand on your roof and see if it collapses

If in doubt you could lash a length of stout timber to the roof beam, bearing on the wall plate at each end, that has given me a bitmore confidence in the past!

Take the head off - and lift it out by hand! Or - modify a child's swing!<br>

Thanks all. I'm going to get a beam and spread the weight over three or four trusses. I got up on a stool and hung off one of the trusses and it didn't even move so I think it should manage a little A series.

Remember when lifting it - there is more than just the static weight of the engine involved!

There may be the whole weight of the car if you miss a bolt

What BMC is saying is that the engine is full of inertia and will resist being lifted up so take it steady.
If you jump up, grab the chain or rope and dangle off it.
Then the beam will see the weight of you, the engine and the block and tackle all at once.
So take it easy out there.

That's exactly the problem - especially is a bolt is left in! The easy way is to take the weight with a trolley jack and move the engine forward on the jack until it's clear of the gearbox - then you are sure you are only lifting the engine.
