Radio Antenna

Can someone tell me what was fitted as a factory option as regards radio aerial's for MM's and Series II? From pics I have seen it was a centre mounted aerial positioned above the centre windscreen pillar on the roof. I really don't want an aerial sticking out of the front guards if I can avoid it.
Does anyone know of a suitable period aerial available?

There wasn't a factory fit.
Some dealers fitted them where they wanted to.
Most were fitted at home.

Mine is fitted to the roof. The interior light is a few inches back from the windscreen and by unscrewing the light allowed me to get access to the roof for drilling and fitting without damaging the roof lining.
Fitting an aerial to the wing does not look so "period" and tends to collect the mud and water, leading to advanced rusting of the wing around the hole.
That may not be such a consideration in your part of the world but with the salt and muck on our roads in winter it is a serious problem.

Hi,
I've used the same fitting position as Mike - using a short DAD aerial.
That position works a lot better than the off-side wing, there less interference from the HT system.
I used a hole punch to cut the hole - much neater than a drill!

iv got an electronic areal that sticks to the inside of the windscreen, then you conect to the power supply and the radio tuck the wires beind the windscreen rubber jobs done

is your electric areal any good big john? was thinking of getting one. How much did it set you back out of interest?

yes works fine better than some "normal" areals got it from halfords a while back if i remember correctly it cost around £20 but does save on drilling the car

I have an electronic windscreen aerial fitted to my van. It cost £6.50 including p&p in july buy it now on ebay. It works a treat.
I have just transferred it to my new heated windscreen - I wondered with the heating element in the glass that the signal might be screened ( 'scuse the pun), but it has made no difference to reception at all. Interestingly the new sticky pads normally supplied for rearview mirrors that i used to stick it to the new screen cost almost as much as the aerial in the first place
