Pick up rear tilt help needed

Post by LotusLee »

Hello,
I am hoping someone can help me solve a pick up problem, I have bought some second hand hoops for my pick up and I have managed to buy a brand new canvass tilt for my pickup along with new hooks etc. The trouble I have is that when the hoops are fitted and I place the canvass tilt on top, the hoops do not appear higher enough. When fitting the hoops, I pushed them all the way into the holes i.e. all the way down as far as they will go, so with the canvass tilt on top it appears that the hoops are 3 or 4 inches too short.

So the questions are;

1. Am I doing something wrong?
2. Are hoops different sizes and if so where can I find another set, the correct type.
3. Should I sell my canvass tilt, hoops, hooks etc and remove the wood on the cab and keep it like that or does the canvass tilt in place make the pick up look better and more desirable? My pickup is very nice and painted body colour underneath and I was trying to finish it off the best I could by replacing the tilt etc.

Any help appreciated.

Regards

Lee, it comes down to personal preference in my opinion. Not that Ive got further than repairing the chassis on mine, but I have given the hoop and tilt option some thought. minor Pickups look great don't they, cute, Ive heard someone say on here, so useful, especialy when you forget to put out the rubbish bags on bin collection day, getting wood and sink fittings from B&Q, the list is long. But the Brit weather means that hoop and tilt keeps the back dry. The only hoops Ive seen up close are these on a wreck in east sussex.

The hoops sizes as far as Im aware arent different sizes and the only answer could be that someone may have cut their bottoms off.

The tilt cover should fit so that the lower edge just sits around the top of the sides or with just a small over lap, something similar to mine on the photo enclosed. Although you will note that my front hoop is slightly distorted and lifts the front of the tilt on the cab back a bit oddly.

If you wanted I can measure the height from the pickup bed to the top of the hoops to confirm whether something weird has gone on with your hoops.

Many thanks for your messages, looking at the photos and seeing how high the hoops are mine are definately wrong, when my hoops are fitted they are about level with the cab roof and in your photos they should be higher, so I thought they looked 3 or 4 inches too short and that looks to be correct when looking at your photos.

I will either have to try and extend the hoops or try and find another set.

Thanks for the advice.

Oh wow, Steve - that looks great!
A tilt is definitely on my wish list but I really should sort out other things first (like the brakes).

What's probably happened to your hoops is that they were probably rusted into their sockets on the original pickup sides and when they were removed they were seized in and someone just chopped them off flush with the sides. Hence they're now missing the 3" ish

Ive actually got one spare hoop that has exactly the same issue.

For information the hoop with holes drilled about half way up the vertical is the most forward hoop. The holes are there to fasten on a webbing strap in place and then strap all of the hoops to the front hoop and they are supported in the little cradle situated on the cabback to side bracket. (the little silver things in my photo).

One the photo's supplied by david you can actually see this said strap something that Im missing actually, david's photo also shows the very rare little cradles. .
