Thanks all!

BMC - on the back of a truck, it was the stork's day off.

Jonathon - may have already met you. We were at the Autumn Classic at Gaydon in our Beetle and spoke to whichever one of you was there in your Traveller.

It is supposed to be stone grey but seems a lot lighter.

Hi Stuart, I would say the car is smoke grey, and that would be correct for that year of car.
It looks very snazzy :D

You don't say where the car came from - but I would say - go over it thoroughly right away with a FINE tooth comb - and make sure you are happy with every little bit of it. All to often 'new' owners come on here after a few weeks with tales of woe - if there is anything not quite right (and I sincerely hope there is not!) - you should get it sorted out with the vendor right away. Far easier now - than 3 months down the road.

Thanks. I got it from a dealer with whom I have had dealings before and he is now offering warranties, 1 month free or purchase 3 months for £100 which is pretty good for a classic car dealer. The previous owner bought the car from Charles Ware just over a year ago and I have the paperwork from that exchange. I am hopeful therefore that there are no nasty surprises lurking. First task this weekend is to go over things and check. Mechanically everything was better than expected on the test drive.

" The previous owner bought the car from Charles Ware just over a year ago " - as I suggested earlier - check it all over VERY carefully!!
Worth noting the current thread in 'Bodywork' re - removing the kickplates.

Well as suggested I gave her a good going over today and am pleased to report I didn't find anything worrying. Took the sill covers off and found this. It was all undersealed and waxoiled as far as I could reach inside.

We went for our maiden voyage today. Just a quick 30 mile round trip to Leamington Spa and back. She performed admirably. They roll a bit in the corners don't they? Stopped off to take a few photos for the insurance company.
Image
