Stupid fuel filter question

The Haynes manual I have shows the fuel filter being behind the banjo bolt fuel inlet, and another one being inside the fuel pump inlet. OK, but the carb I have doesn't look like the one in the manual and neither does the pump.

My SU has a smooth inlet nipple leading into the float bowl, but no filter that I could see. The fuel pump mounts vertically, instead of horizontally like the one in the manual and the inlets/outlets are different. None of the pictures of pumps I saw online look like this one, but it's clearly very old.

Is the fuel filter(s) intended to be external in this configuration?

I'll get some pictures tonight.

Only early carbs had a filter in the float chamber inlet - and it sounds like you have a non-standard fuel pump.

Hmmm... The Haynes manual covers Minors from 56-71, but that's the only type of carb discussed! I'll a place a filter inline then.

Here's the pics. The carb is actually from a 2 carb set up, but a similar carb is on the engine.

Yep - another HS2 carb - the piston is stuck UP! No filter in that carb.
PM sent.

Yeah, those carbs are just on the shelf and will eventually get installed. There's oil in the pot, and the pistons move freely, but are a little bit stiff. The pistsons in both carbs clearly need some lubrication. The one currently in the car is fine.

Luckily, I still have my syncrometer from when I had a '67 Volvo 122s with dual SUs. My memory for tuning them isn't so great, but I'll read up on that when we're ready to install the dual intake.

IIRC those Bendix pumps have a filter in the bottom. Right on the bottom is a small hexagon piece for a wrench, about 5/8", maybe 11/16", turn it counter-clockwise and the bottom comes off the pump.
I haven't seen one of them pumps for about 40 or 50 years, we used to use the 6 volt ones on the flathead fords. :)

Don't use ANY form of abrasive on the carb pistons or bells! Just clean thoroughly - and very lightly lubricate with the thinnest oil you can find.
