I want to swap the gearbox change lever extension on our 65 convertible but not sure if this is a gearbox out jobbie or whether it will come out with the gearbox tunnel removed and the gearbox support bracket loosened/removed? Thanks, John

take the gearbox cover off from inside the car.
Lift the carpets to find the screws takes ages to remove them all but its a darn sight easier than taking gearbox out.

Why do you want to swop it ? Never heard of one failing - or wearing out!

I'm putting a 1275 with reversing light switch on, wifey keeps leaving the manual switch on! Regards, John

Change the wife,
Its a Damn sight easier than getting some of the 40 year old brass screws out

;)
If you must keep the same wife then after removing the gearbox cover it should be a nice simple job.
Oh and check the anti rattle springs and plungers while your at it. Easier to change now than later.

Wire the reversing light switch up to the side light terminal of the light switch and wire in a bright warning light!

Thanks for the advice which I have taken very seriously, particularly in relation to changing the wife. I have completed the job and for a change it was quite a nice job to do. The floor cover plate came off easily as I had repainted it and replaced all the screws 3 years ago. The gearlever extension came off ok and was simple to swap. Wiring for the existing reversing lamp was inside the car running close to the transmission tunnel so straightforward to cut into it and connect up. My contribution to making the roads safer when wifey is driving
