Tyres for MGF Wheels

Morning all,

I have MGF wheels ready to fit my 2 door saloon and the tyres that came fitted to the wheels are 185's & 205's - a standard fitment to the MGF I think. The 185's are just about OK and and don't touch the front upright on the suspension when the car is on stands. The 205's rub against the front upright when the car is on stands.

I think I need to fit tyres with a narrower profile (165's) but just wondered what others have used before I go and ask for the wrong thing. The car isn't MOT'd so cant drive it to the garage although I thought about asking them to fit one tyre to a wheel then bring it home and try it before buying 4.

The 185's are a better fit on the back axle as there is more room here so another option might be to use the 185's at the rear and fit 165's at the front?

I'd be intersted to hear what size tyres others have used?

Thanks in advance, Jeff

I would say 165s are too narrow for these wheels Jeff, will look really silly. Stick to the 185s!

Agreed 165's will be too narrow and the wall will be deformed.
Go for the 185's on the front and 205's at the rear.

i had 185/55/15's on my MGF wheels, they are the 6j ones. with 3mm spacers they cleared the trunnions fine.
on the rear i have 205/60/16's on 7j wheels. they fit fine, plenty of space from the springs. but...i did buy JLH's 2inch wider rear wings to compensate as they came out of the arches. looks great now though!

That's a good point - are the front and rear wheels on the MGF not different widths ?

Thanks boys some food for thought there. Callyspoy did you make your spacers or buy them from a supplier like Midland Wheels?

Presumambly if the tyres with 205 tyres on stick out wider than the rear wing it won't pass an MOT?

Not unless the MOT tester is blind! If you fit any decent thickness of spacer Jeff - you will need longer studs.

i *think* the MGF wheels only came in 6j and 7j. the 15" ones again i *think* are 6j, and the 16" are 7j.
i bought my spacers from a local shop, although i'd imagine ebay might be easy too. the 3mm spacer did not require longer studs, but that is my opinion, you can make your own mind up.
the wheels did come out of the arches yes, it didn't get pulled up on last years MOT for it, but i think that was a fluke. the front ones sit in the arches fine, just the rears i had a problem with, but if you fit 15" on the rear that may not be the case as they are a smaller width...

I've never had a problem with tyres poking out the arches at MOT time.
Try here for spacers and all things for wheels:
