i tend to put a piece of wood in the yoke of the axel stands and put them under the rear panel behind the petrol tank.. they are then well out of the way of me faffing about with springs and axle

Axle stands obviously go under ....the axle ! Jack the body of the car up with large slabs of timber to spread the load. Just do one side at a time.

the trouble is he wants to take the springs off.. so if he supported just the axle the car would fall on him! much like a land rover fell on another poster.. unless of course you are trying to do away with other members of the club :o

i tend to support along the back of the car behind the petrol tank i.e. under the boot area.

When I changed my Traveller rear springs I put an axle stand under the front spring hanger which with a bit of careful positioning gave me room to get the front bolt out with a lot of sawing, bashing and swearing. The other axle stand went under the axle to support it whilst I undid the rear spring hangers.

Let the axle stay put - on it's axle stands(!) - and jack the car up and down as necessary! Less likely to fall off anything that way.

Sorry to hijack th thread. My plan is to replace the front n/s chassis leg. How best to raise the car and support it whilst performing moggie surgery?

Cheers

Place the axle stand as far forward on the chassis leg as possible and place a length of timber in between to spread the load.
