have you got the correct type of rubber for that metal strip. the screen and rubber is fitted to the car and then the strip inserted last. as far as i know

Yes, the stainless steel insert is flat when removed.
As far as I'm aware there is a special tool which can be used to help get the trim into the rubber after fitting the wndow (but i've never put one back in)

You should fit the seal around the windscreen first, then fit the finishers to the seal, then fit the assembly from the outside. The finishers can't be fitted after screen/seal fitment to the car, unlike the split screen cars.
You do have the early 1000 rubber & not the late (1098cc) rubber, don't you?
The 1000 front rubber is one of the easiest to replace.

Well that sounds like he knows more than me. Certainly with the late minor 100, the round insert can go in last - sounds like that is different on the early 1000.

Scott is correct this problem came up fairly recently and both myself and Cam got it wrong as we did not read the post correctly and assumed it was the later 1000 without the 2 part stainless strip.

Just to confirm....I had a Laminated screen fitted to my '57
car and the stainless insert was fitted to the rubber first and
then,with glass inserted, the complete assembly was offered
up to the car from the outside. The later type plastic insert is
fitted AFTER the windscreen and rubber have been fitted. There is
a tool available which makes this very easy. No, I haven't got
one!!

According to the workshop manual, the finisher must be fitted before fitting the rubber to the car. I have only ever done it this way.

It might be possible to fit after which is why I asked if Paul had success with his.

Sorry Ray, lots more early cars over here than later ones (the only 1098cc cars over here are private imports). If I'm stuck on my 1970, you'll be the first to know.

no wonder so many got converted to modern engines! - can't imagine wanting to do a run of hundreds of miles each way at series 2 speed...

Does it work with minor rubbers to put a string in the groove in the rubber and fit it all up to the body then pull the string from inside the vehicle to help the rubber lip come over the metal body lip???

I've never fitted a windscreen yet, just pulled a few out and will be fitting one in soon.

Yes Fweddy, that's pretty much the way with single piece windscreens. Try to use a plastic type string or electrical wire (not too thin as it will tend to try & cut into the rubber) & you might need some lubricant also to ease the rubber over the lip. An assistant pushing the glass from the outside will be handy also. Plain water should be the best to use as a lubricant as it will dry out the quickest before adding sealant.
