Fuel?

Post by Psiteep »

Sorry, I'm being a pest again. What is the best petrol to put in my sidevale Moggy? [She is called Jemima by the way, after Beatrix Potter'ds character in her books]
Do I use Four Star where I can get it, Or will unleaded be all right with a shot or twO of UCL?
Thanks, Psiteep Robert

It has super low compression ratio - and was built in an era when 'leaded' fuel was not the norm. So just buy the lowest cost unleaded you can find - and no need for any additives!

Thank you Carpe diem, I thought so, glad she won't need any additives, saves time and effort :o). Curious, is that one of the Welsh Small Railways you have in your pictures?

The side valve engine was designed in the '30s when the octane rating was somewhere in the 80s, so a Series MM will run on just about any petrol you can find. Having said that, it was the norm to lift the head and decoke the valves at regular service intervals.
When I first had my Series MM I ran it on 2 star, then 3 star when 2 star was discontinued, and after that, 4 star. What I did find out was that the higher octane petrol I used, the fewer valves were burned out. Since I have had the engine coverted to run on unleaded fuel there has been no sign of valve wear.
You have not mentioned earlier that you had a Series MM. Please send me the car details for the Register
