Having just got a somerset with no engine, but having a wolseley 1500 engine sitting on my work bench, whats involved in adapting it to fit the austin?
i know the engines are vertually the same, but not having seen a somerset engine, i dont know what it looks like and what the differences are.

I fitted a somerset engine in my Devon back in 1970 (same engine), and have used B series lumps in my Minor over the years. From memory, I think the 1500 B series is physically larger (longer) than the 1200 (pre B series) fitted to the somerset, but not by much.
I think in the day it was a common enough swap, so it would just be the case of mating the engine to the box - or use the wolseley box. There may be clutch differences to overcome, and minor fettling of engine mounts, exhaust system etc. Join the Austin club where you will get best advice.
If I were you, I'd just fit an MGB engine and box , uprate the brakes, fit wider wheels with better tyres (Ford 4 stud is the same I believe), and enjoy.
