how on earth do you attach a minor engine onto an engine stand? i know it bolts on, but where it bolts on to is a complete mystery to me

Depends on what type of stand you have - Some pick up off engine mounts, some off lifting eyes attached to the head bolts and some off the crank......

My stand has 4 adjustable mounting brackets which can be moved to fit around the back plate.

You need long bolts to go through the guide holes, the same thread as the holes in the engine that you want to attach the stand to.
You will of course have to suspend the engine from a hoist whilst you attach it.

sounds like a plan, however considering morris engine are usually the old style thread and good bolts this type are hard to locate, any sugestions where i could source such long bolts?

Just to sum up the description of my stand, it consists of a rotating plate with 4 slots, into which are bolted 4 arms with a tube on the other end of each. The bolts need to be long enough to reach through the tubes with enough thread exposed to bolt onto the engine. For an A series engine you will probably need unf bolts. Try a good hardware store or the intenet. You will also need some large washers. Search for Unf bolt suppliers and you will get a selection

presumably a b series engine would be unf as well?

I would expect so. The only reliable way to find out is to measure the bolts with a thread gauge.

Just use a bench! A whole lot less hassle.

I have the MachineMart engine stand and I got the bolts from Stagonset when I did my Ford Pop. They held well enough.
