Thinners maybe but if the leather is dyed I would try a hidden area first to see if the dye is effected.....

Hairspray removes it

I googled "remove permanent marker from leather how to", and there are lots of suggestions. Hairspray is mentioned in the google index, but I didn't go to any pages.
Good luck. Maybe try out the various suggestions by marking some old, unwanted similar leather with the same marker, and experimenting on that.

I would not put WD40 on 40 year old leather!

lynx (the spray not the cat) or similar works well on c.d cases but never tried it on leather

Hair spray gets permanent marker off walls - try on a bit that doesn't show first, try it and make sure it doesn't remove colour. If it looks like it's working do it slowly letting it all dry before another session.

I can see a new regalia range arriving soon. MMOC marigolds with a tasteful logo on the wrist and handy frilly cuff to prevent those pesky springs and 2ba screws from shooting up your sleeve when tackling messy engine bay maintenance. Also available in pink for the more discerning customer

someone's discovered my day job!

Pink won't go with any interiors! nice pale blue or almond green?

Yep. I'll second that. Very good for getting boiled/chewy sweets off carpet too.
