dvd/cd's

Post by les »

What is the idea behind the + and - recordable dvd's etc, and is there a preference?

From Wikipedia:

The 'minus' type.........."the first DVD recordable format released in the market. Developed by Pioneer and backed by the DVD Forum. Has broader playback compatibility than the "+" especially with much older players."

Personally I prefer CDs...they are said to have a longer life expectancy. When I 'burn' a DVD, I always get a message saying I will not be able to add files later. So unless I fill it up in one go, I lose a lot of the capacity.

I like flash drives....those little memory sticks you plug into the USB. Good value for money, getting bigger (in capacity) all the time, and I've never had a problem. Impossible to scratch, also!

If you ever want to send info to someone - pictures and video for example - there are many free file sharing sites. I use 4Shared, and get 5GB of storage for free. I just upload to 4Shared, and then send the URL (web address) to the recipient, and they can download it, also for free. Don't tell anyone, but if you want more free storage, you can just open another account with a different email address, from the same computer.

CDs and DVDs in the post is no longer necessary. Why pay for the DVD and the postage? I'm sure the cost of the electricity to send electronically is lower.

A very useful tip I got from a chap in our computer lab is to burn CD for use in older CD players as slow as possible preferably single speed.

Worked a charm for the map CD on an old Becker unit I have.
It wouldn't even recognise a CD that had be burnt at 32x.
Did one at 2 speed and it works perfectly.

Also highly recommended is the freeware program ImgBurn for all your disc creating needs.
