I got my AA renewal notice and noticed in the notes that if i only have roadside assistance the vehicle must be under 10 years old.
Not much use to me so policy now cancelled.

Some classic insurers include both Roadside and Recovery as part of the Policy! Certainly the case with my RH insurance.

In most cases I can do a roadside repair myself, except on the Focus which as yet has not broken down, so all I really need is to be taken home. I must contact the RAC, I have just had a exorbitant renewal premium on my MMOC scheme.

I saw this clause on my AA renewal a year or two ago but thought it only applied to Vehicle membership rather than Personal membership. What type did you have? I have Personal membership as I drive more than one car.

I think you are right about the personal bit but if i am driving MEA, then no AA for me .

I found something similar with "free" roadside assistance that came with my car insurance.
Only applied to cars less than 8 years old which wouldn't even cover my "modern" car

Another thing to check is the recovery. Banks are giving free recovery, but most only cover 10 miles. Fine if you are less than 10 miles from home, but very expensive after.

never had a problem with the AA - I've only needed them twice on Minors in the last 10 years but it's been worth it. I have relay and have been very glad to have it! Last summer I expected a warning letter from them as I had a bad run in old modern cars + failed alternator on the minor on the LEO, but have never heard any complaint from them - not even about the 550 mile relay of a Merc from north Scotland!

For recovery close to home I would call a friend not the AA. On some occassions I've just walked home
Homestart never appealed to me as if I'm at home then I'm warm and comfy and have all my tools with me - added to that I can cycle to work.

I have fleet cover with Britannia. They will cover any car I'm in whether it is a classic or a modern car. I just have roadside assistance and recovery. No home start. Costs about £85 per annum iirc and it has certainly been worth it for me. Most classic car insurers will include cover for an additional premium but it only covers the insured car so if you have more than one classic car to cover Britannia works out cheaper in the long run.

I have full European cover with the AA and have never had a problem with them. You need to have European to cover driving in Southern Ireland. The drivers have always taken my word for what I think is wrong and recovered me home. I broke down (head gasket) on the way back from Bandon one year with a 250 mile journey ahead of me and was home before my mate in his traveller!!

I certainly think its well worth the money. If you break down on the motorway you need recovery as you cant tow and emergency recovery is super expensive. My mate broke down in his focus on the M25 (ha ha) and it cost almost £300 to get the car back to Luton...

Just renewed my Insurance with Footman James which includes breakdown cover.
I tried to have it removed (to save some money) - not possible, as we are also with the RAC for our other vehicles.
