If anyone has information concerning detailed differences between 1098 & 1275 mg gearboxes it would be gratefully received, also confirmation or not, that the 1098 ones are identical to the minor. Thanks in anticipation!

1275 box had much better bearings for the main shaft - and slightly closer ratio gears - and a reverse light switch! I believe 1098 boxes are all the same.

Thanks, now how can I tell one from other?

Just by the reverse light switch I think! Although may be that 1098 Spridget boxes also had the switch - I really don't know that detail!

Just to add to the confusion the Haynes manual for the Spridget (sorry I don't have a BMC manual) lists the Frog eye as having the standard 948 box. It then lists all the others, Midget Mk1 948cc to 1275cc as having the 1275 ratios. I have my doubts about the accuracy.
The 1098 Minor box ratios are 3.628 2.172 1.412 1.0
the 1275 Midget box ratios are 3.200 1.916 1.357 1.0

Well - it is often called the HBOL (Haynes Book of Lies) in Mini circles.

Maybe another approach would be to ask the number of teeth on each gear, for the 1098mg and 1275mg. Any offers? Perhaps it can be done using the ratios?
